New for 2022
Figuring out what to do next
Passerby is up and running. The objective here is to produce a zine monthly showing the previous month’s photographs of note, i.e. work made since the last zine. Focusing my intent in such a way with self imposed monthly deadlines, is already having an effect.
I'm trying to produce better pictures for more consistent submission to my agency, Millennium Imagers for commercial and editorial licensing and to improve my print offerings to customers and collectors. So over time these little books will be like a catalogue of work as it is being produced.
I have introduced a paid subscription to this newsletter. Free subscribers will still see most of the posts but paid subscribers, £10 monthly or £85 yearly, will get Passerby through their letter boxes, discounts on prints and very occasional special posts, such as new writing from Eoin as part of our ongoing Solivagant project and tutorials on my book making techniques that will not be available anywhere else.
In my last posting, now unpublished, I mentioned winding up this newsletter but on serious reflection and discussions with peers, I have decided against that and instead have incorporated the Passerby project into a paid subscription. Some of you have already subscribed using PayPal (thank you) so I will make the necessary adjustments here so that you have full access to the perks.
I am becoming ever more wary of social media and the growing importance of communicating directly with a subscriber base, a core group of people who have shown interest in my artistic endeavours, many of whom are fellow “creatives” whom I support in return. I will keep up my instagram activities as it is an important facility to reach out across the internet to grow my audience and bring them here. But this newsletter and my website will be where I do most of my work in future.
These two might be in the next Passerby. Broken bus shelter in Sydenham during Storm Barra.
I am making substantial adjustments to the way I work and pointing my practice in a whole new direction. This is a necessary adjustment brought on by the Covid Emergency and the changing nature of work that we are all noticing. Over these last weeks and months I have been applying for jobs, reaching out to contacts in the media, doing interviews, filling out endless application forms. You name it. I’ve done it. This is taking up much time and mental effort and feels increasingly futile. So I have been taking stock of my talents, skills and experience and I am constructing my own job utilising multiple income streams. This newsletter will be a very important part of that, along with my website.
For now I am building on the successes I have had self publishing over the last 18 months or so and targeting new markets for commissions and hi-end print sales to best adapt to a post covid economy.
I will be writing to various individuals on this email list over the coming weeks to follow up on a few things.
Please consider sharing this newsletter with whomever you think might enjoy it and also think about whether or not you’d like Passerby to drop into your letter box from time to time.
Thank you for your interest and support. Please feel free to comment, ask questions, share advice or whatever. And if you know any collectors that might be interested in my images, please share with them.
Paul.
