Hello
Before I get to the second making of video, might I just spill some thoughts about the place first.
After much faffing about trying to settle into a photography and book making groove post covid, I have finally established one.
These little Passerby books seem to have struck a chord with many of you. Thank you for your continued interest and support. I have played around with different formats and materials but have settled on a few constants. Matte paper that can be easily folded without the ink breaking. Tapes and no glue. Light weight for shipping so no hard cover. Custom boxes for dispatch. The dimensions will remain constant too for the time being.
I’m going to stick to this process and style of working for at least the next three years assuming continued good health, putting out 6-8 of these books annually. I will also make selected prints available per issue for the duration of that issue. This will involve moving to Shopify for Printspace integration (something I’ve been working on for months). I will then review how it’s all going after 3 years. In the mean time I’ll just get on and do the work.
I will continue my 20 hours a week at Apple and the rest of my time will be split between photo assignments and gathering material for Passerby. The best of this work will then be submitted to my agency for curation.
I’ll likely reduce my postings to Instagram of new images showing them here instead as I make them. Instagram will be a place for me to show my processes and finished books in an effort to bring that audience here.
Something I’m thinking about and would love some feedback on is a simple subscription for a monthly postcard print of a new image sent in an envelope. I’d need a physical address, or course.
Passerby 8 has been slow to move but it’s gathering momentum. I shipped 3 this week, to England and Japan. Slow because I haven’t been as busy as perhaps I should have been making noise on social media. But adjusting how I use instagram should help.
Earlier buyers of Passerby may also not be aware of how much I have improved the product and packaging. And the photography is getting more interesting too.
I’ll leave it there for now. Next post will be the second part of the tutorial video. It’s already shot. I just need to edit it.
Thanks for your time. See you soon.
